On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death - when Villa Romana is dedicating him All Music is The Same. Works from the Block Collection - Radio Papesse releases a collection of conversation with artists, friends and composers who have met, befriended, collaborated and improvised with Giuseppe Chiari between the Sixties and Seventies: Giancarlo Cardini, Alvin Curran, Gian Piero Frassinelli, Daniele Lombardi, Paolo Masi, Lara Vinca Masini, Gianni Pettena and Renato Ranaldi.

For Florence, the city he has always lived in, was a period of great change and hybridization between art languages, media and architecture; years of great liberation. The portrait that emerges from these meetings and these voices is a kaleidoscopic image not only of the artist but also of a lively cultural season.

Giuseppe Chiari has been a central artistic figure for the expansion of the musical canon since the 1960s. He infiltrated the artistic genre both playfully and analytically. Chiari was a musician, composer and an artist. He wrote, drew and performed. With his scores, texts and gestures, he achieved a unique combination of symbolic intellectual orders and lively action. His reflexive, creative approach aimed to loosen the world’s axes and make unnoticed elements audible and visible.

Chiari was born in Florence in 1926 and died there ten years ago. He was a personality who was as modest as he was influential for the generation of artists that came after him. Chiari gave this generation the courage to cross boundaries and discover new freedoms. He had an international network and cooperated with many composers, poets, musicians, architects and the Florentine video studio art/tapes/22.

All the conversations - with the exception of Alvin Curran's - are in Italian.

Giancarlo Cardini

Giancarlo Cardini is pianist, composer and for many years piano teacher at the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence. He has collaborated with John Cage, Morton Feldman and many other composers and performers.

Although he was of a younger generation, Cardini is today considered -together with Chiari, Sylvano Bussotti, Daniele Lombardi, Pietro Grossi and others - part of that Nuova Musica wave, interested in the interaction of sound, gesture, sign and vision, that informed the Florentine music scene of the second-twentieth century.

Alvin Curran

Born in 1938, Alvin Curran is a composer and musician. He has been living in Rome since the 1960s when he - together with Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum and others - is among the founders of the Musica Elettronica Viva group. The meeting with Chiari took place in Rome, thanks to the joint collaboration with Vittorio Gelmetti. Concerning Giuseppe Chiari he says he was a liberator ...

Gian Piero Frassinelli

Born in 1939, Gian Piero Frassinelli, is architect and artist. He lives in Florence, where in 1968 he became part of Superstudio, a leading group of the italian radical architecture. He met Giuseppe Chiari at art/tapes/22 and for a long time he was a subordinate and occasional collaborator.

Daniele Lombardi

Born in 1946, Daniele Lombardi is pianist, composer and visual artist based in Florence. A few years younger than the generation of Chiari, Pietro Grossi and Sylvano Bussotti, he does not feel to be their heir or epigone but he is one of the deepest connoisseurs of Nuova Musica and is one of the greatest intepreter of Chiari's compositions.

Paolo Masi

Paolo Masi was born in 1933; he is an artist living in Florence. He is one of the protagonists of the pittura analitica current in Italy and in 1974, together with Maurizio Nannucci and Mario Mariotti, he founded Zona Non Pfofit Art Space in Florence.
In spite of the diverse paths they have followed, despite their poetics and aesthetics being not always close, Paolo Masi observed Giuseppe Chiari with an interest that traversed the single event or the single encounter.

Lara Vinca Masini

Lara Vinca Masini has participated in writing the history of Italian contemporary art in the second half of the twentieth century. At the very beginning of her career she worked for Sele Arte, an art magazine directed by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti and in 1965 she inaugurated the independent art space Centro Proposte with the exhibition Proposte strutturali plastiche e sonore. In 1980, she curated Umanesimo, Disumanesimo nell’arte europea 1890/1980, a radical exhibition that involved ten European artists invited to intervene in the city's many courtyards and squares.

Gianni Pettena

Born in 1940, Gianni Pettena lives in Florence. He is an architect and artist and together with Archizoom, Superstudio and Ufo, it belongs to the original nucleus of the Italian radical architecture. He knew Chiari shortly after moving to Florence to study Architecture and they became friends and collaborated, played and traveled together for many years.

Renato Ranaldi

Renato Ranaldi is artist and writer; far from belonging to specific artistic trends, he has always investigated and worked on the boundaries, margins, embracing contradictions, always on the edge between painting, sound, video and sculpture. He appreciates Chiari's histrionicism and his ability to overfly and hybridize the disciplines with a great degree of freedom.
