Some call it sound-art, new music, research sounds, acoustic experimentations or liminal sounds, we just call them Pepite, golden nuggets: tips on sound research, precious bits of our programming. Each week we select few Pepite and highlight them into our free from streaming.

Our weekly exploration into sound experimentation delves into the realm of labour through three soundpieces coming from diverse latitude and depicting various work conditions:

Sebenza eMine by Philip Miller and Lucia Ronchetti
Sebenza eMine is a project about the South African mines, focusing especially on the underground acoustic landscape. The architecture of the mines, the verticality they develop underground and the specialised human activity generate a very complex and interesting sound scenario that our dramaturgical composition will try to analyse, reproduce and elaborate.

La Fabbrica di Santa Maria del Fiore by Luigi Mastandrea
The piece by Luigi Mastandrea is dedicated to the giant construction site of the Florentine Dome for the building of which works lasted more than 170 years between the XIII and XV Centuries. Loads of master craftsmen and artists were involved and the Dome soon became a workshop for innovative architectural techniques. The piece wants exactly to allude to the grandeur of the project, to the surprise for the high and never seen before scaffolding. Although the workplace should has been noisy, Luigi Mastandea imagines the Dome at night, silent, under the continuous attention of all its workers.

Vacant City Radio by Anna Fritz
From 2001-2002 sound artist Anna Fritz recorded the soundscapes of abandoned factories and wharehouses in Montreal. She seized them by fillin’ them up with radio waves and resonances. The project is still ongoing.
